Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today presented State Historic Preservation Office grants including a second round of development grant funds for nine projects totaling $228,479, as well as survey and planning grant funds for eight projects totaling an additional $107,600.
“As we begin to commemorate our 150th anniversary of statehood, we are reminded of the importance of our historic places,” Gov. Tomblin said. “Each project awarded today aims to keep our history alive for future generations and I’m pleased to be able to offer this support.”
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History administers the development grant program, as well as the survey and planning grant program. The development grant funds are for projects involving the restoration; rehabilitation; or archaeological development of historic sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The survey and planning grants are for projects involving architectural and archaeological surveys; preparation of National Register of Historic Places nominations; heritage education programs relating to preservation activities; pre-development activities; and comprehensive planning documents.
The SHPO made recommendations to the Archives and History Commission, which made the final grant determinations. Funding for the development grants come from the appropriation of funds from the West Virginia Legislature. Survey and planning grant funds are appropriated by the U.S. Congress for preservation efforts through the National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund. Recipients include:

Greenbrier County Historic Landmark Commission –Â $7,000
To conduct Phase IV of the Greenbrier County Architectural Survey.
City of Charleston/Charleston Historic Landmark Commission –Â $14,000
To conduct an intensive-level architectural and history survey of areas in Charleston known as East End North.
Greenbrier Historic Landmark Commission –Â $35,000
To prepare a predevelopment document for the Blue Sulphur Spring House.
