Active Southern West Virginia and the National Park Service are striving to continue efforts to keep the public engaged with ideas to keep them physically active while staying safe. Active SWV and the NPS will be hosting the annual Firefly Walk with a twist. This year Community Captain volunteer, Bob Matson and NPS Ranger Leah Perkowski-Sisk, invite the public to join them online in a two-week-long Virtual Firefly Event, June 22nd – July 3rd, 2020.

What does “virtual” mean? This means you will check-in online with the facebook event page to interact with the Community Captain volunteer and rangers. You will walk and hike on your own following safety guidelines for your local area. Anyone can participate!

Active SWV and the NPS are asking everyone to find their favorite trail, field, yard, or just go on a stroll through your neighborhood and observe fireflies. An additional goal is to get all of the participants to help the WV Department of Natural Resources with their Firefly Study while participating in the event. More information about the WV DNR project can be found at this link: https://wvdnr.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=073c065f82ec478789c9fd44ba1b45ef.

The Active SWV Community Captain and NPS Ranger will also be posting educational information about fireflies in the event page for all to enjoy. Additionally, participants are asked to go on a firefly walk on their own time in their neighborhoods, post photos on the event page, report back on the number counted, ask questions, and learn more about fireflies with the group. Please follow all state and local guidelines if you plan to do your firefly walk in a public space.
