The fifth annual Human Rights/Human Relations Conference will be held April 11-12 at West Virginia State University (WVSU) and explore the theme of increasing human understanding.
This year’s conference includes a University-wide cross-section of faculty and students as participants and presenters and will feature a variety of state, local and national experts in the fields of human rights and human relations. All activities are free and open to the public and will take place in the Erickson Alumni Center on the WVSU campus.
The conference will begin at noon on Wednesday, April 11, with a performance by the Montclaire String Quartet, the quartet in residence at WVSU. Other activities Wednesday will include a presentation at 3 p.m. by Sen. Mark Drennan, R-Putnam; Del. Mike Pushkin, D-Kanawha; and WVSU MPA Program Coordinator Dr. Michael Pennington, on the topic of “Politics, Bipartisanship and the Representation of Diverse Interests.”
Wednesday will also feature a presentation at 7 p.m. by Gerard Robinson, executive director of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Center for Advancing Opportunity, on the topic of “Education, Civil Society and Human Relations.”
On Thursday, April 12, Rabbi Victor Urecki of the B’nai Jacob Synagogue will begin the day’s lineup of activities at 10 a.m. with a discussion of Holocaust Remembrance Day. Other featured speakers Thursday include Howard University Professor of History Dr. Daryl Scott who will be discussing “The Role of Black History in the Remaking of American Intergroup Relations in the 20th Century” at 4:30 p.m.
