Concord University’s Black Student Union Celebrating Black History Month

The Black Student Union at Concord University it their mission this February to educate the community about Black History Month. The week of Feb. 8 – 12, the Black Student Union will be running the annual Crush Sale. Feb. 10 they will also be showing “Fruitvale Station” with a discussion to follow.

The Crush Sale fundraiser allows the community the opportunity to purchase a bottle of Crush soda for $2 each with the option to create a personalized message costing $2.50. The Crush sodas can be delivered or picked up on Feb. 12. This event will take place in Concord University’s Jean and Jerry Beasley Student Center (across from the bookstore, ground level) from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This fundraiser is used to raise money for the annual Umoja Ball held by the Black Student Union which is scheduled for Feb. 26.

Black History Month has inspired the Black Student Uniono also host a movie showing of “Fruitvale Station” that opens up discussion about African American culture in today’s society. The showing of “Fruitvale Station” will be Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. in Concord University’s Marsh Hall Room 333. Refreshments will be provided. There is no admission charge.

The events in February are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to celebrate Black History Month.

Ashley Hawkins, a member of Concord’s Black Student Union says, “Everyone should come participate in the events this month because of their educational value. BSU wants to inform the community of the Black Student Union’s mission and to stress the importance of Black History Month.”

BSU encourages any Concord University student to join their organization. Meetings are every Sunday at 8 p.m. at Subway Sides in the Student Center.
