In observance of Constitution Day, West Virginia University College of Law is hosting a discussion about U.S. Supreme Court recent rulings and trends on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. in the Marlyn E. Lugar Courtroom at the law school. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Discussion topics include the Fourth Amendment, same-sex marriage, affirmative action and voting rights.

The panel will consist of five WVU law professors, including Bradley A. Smith, the 2013-14 Visiting Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. Chair of Law. He is a former chairman and commissioner of the Federal Election Commission and a professor at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio.

Other Constitution Day panelists include WVU law professors Gerald G. Ashdown, Robert M. Bastress, Atiba R. Ellis, and Anne Marie Lofaso.

Former West Virginia senator Robert Byrd (1917-2010) sponsored the legislation that established Constitution Day in 2004. The law requires that all publicly funded educational institutions provide special programming on or near that day every year. The College of Law hosts an annual event that fulfills that responsibility for WVU.
