Heroes with Paws
When West Virginians think about frontline heroes—those fighting for our physical, mental and emotional well-being and keeping us safe from all types of harm—most minds immediately jump to thoughts of the brave men and women serving our state. However, what some Mountaineers may not realize is that not all the state’s heroes are human—some have paws.

Greenbrier County Revitalization
In June 2016, Greenbrier County was devastated by a flood that destroyed lives and debilitated towns. Following the tragedy, the county united and began to rebuild its community, which caused a resurgence that has been growing exponentially since. Greenbrier County is rich in spirit and grit, and its citizens have worked tirelessly to build back all that was lost and more.

In the Chef’s Corner: Big Draft Brewing
A group of entrepreneurial friends is at the center of the revitalization taking place in Greenbrier County. When Clay Elkins, J.W. Groseclose and David Bostic came up with an idea for a new brewery, they decided from the start that they always wanted it to be more than just a place that crafted and served beer. They wanted it to be a place that brought people together.

Adrenaline-Inducing Adventures
All-terrain vehicle (ATV) trails offer a unique recreational opportunity for thrill seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. In West Virginia, this industry draws in visitors from across the country. With its diverse terrain, gorgeous views and thriving hospitality industry, the Mountain State is a natural home for a variety of ATV trail locations and businesses. What are you waiting for? Growth at the Gorge
What has long been recognized by West Virginians as a southeastern gem has officially received the designation it deserves. Effective December 27, 2020, the New River Gorge became the U.S.’s 63rd national park. The new status for this stunning destination has significant implications for the Mountain State.

High-Five
The Mountain State is well-known for its incredible beauty and outdoor adventures. While in Almost Heaven, visitors will find cozy mountain escapes among the rolling hills of Appalachia. Many have enjoyed West Virginia’s beauty through photographs and paintings for generations. However, West Virginia’s beauty is now more available to view than ever through social media.

Almost Heaven Glamping
Not commonly thought of as a destination for weekend getaways, West Virginia is becoming a hub for outdoor exploration. Adventurers are flocking to the state to experience its unending beauty. While many decide to pitch a tent during their travels, others may feel the need for something a bit more luxurious, and glamping is the solution. Simply put, glamping is where nature meets the comfort and convenience of modern amenities.

Travel Goals
In the winter of 2018, I purchased a state parks poster from Charleston print shop, Basecamp Printing Company. The poster features an outline of West Virginia and numbered pins where all the state parks are located. There are 34 state parks, nine state forests and two rail trails that make up the state parks system. As a lifelong West Virginian, I had no idea there were so many places that fell under the state parks umbrella. This poster purchase set in motion the idea of trying to visit all 45 destinations.

Mountain State Meets the Milky Way
West Virginia is well-known for its picture-perfect views of majestic mountains and rolling hills highlighted by the rising or setting sun. However, what many don’t know is that, to a small community of photographers, it is also known for unmatched celestial views that can only be found by the dark cover of night.

The Return of Fall Festivities in West Virginia
The arrival of autumn in West Virginia is marked by a chill in the air, changing leaves and the celebration of harvests and haunts. This year, it will also be marked by the return of some of the Mountain State’s best seasonal events. After a year of cancelations, residents and visitors alike are looking forward to the fairs, festivals and attractions that characterize fall in Almost Heaven.
