Dr. Kimberly D. Whitehead Named Associate Provost for West Virginia State

Dr. Kimberly D. Whitehead has been named Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for WVSU, effective July 1.

“Dr. Whitehead brings a wealth of academic knowledge and technical innovation to our programs,” says Provost R. Charles Byers. “As our new Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, she brings a skill set that will advance our administrative area.”

Whitehead comes to Institute from Rowan University where she served as the Associate Dean/Director of Academic Services for the University’s Camden, N.J., campus since 2010.

“I am truly honored to join the West Virginia State University family at this time in the history of the institution,” Whitehead says. “I am excited about the opportunity to work collaboratively with the stakeholders of this distinguished University as we prepare students to be leaders in the global economy.”

Earlier in her career, Whitehead worked as the Founding Director of the Honors Program and an Assistant Professor of Biology at Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. She has also served as the Special Assistant to the Provost at Bowie State University in Bowie, Md.

Whitehead earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a pre-medical concentration from Norfolk State University and earned her doctorate degree in genetics from North Carolina State University.

After completing her studies at N.C. State, she won a National Cancer Institute Research Training Fellowship for postdoctoral training with the Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis.   She also completed postdoctoral training at Fayetteville State University with the Biomedical Research Training Program.

Whitehead is a native of Smithfield, Va.
