The family and friends of Rita R. LeHere, formerly of Grafton, have established a scholarship in her memory at West Virginia University’s College of Education and Human Services.
The merit-based scholarship will benefit students in teacher education with a preference to residents of Taylor County followed by students from Harrison, Marion, Monongalia and Wood counties.
Rita LeHere graduated in teacher education from the College, formerly known as the College of Human Resources and Education, in 1943. She taught at Grafton High School in the 1940s, as well as in the public and parochial schools in Taylor, Monongalia, Harrison, Marion and Wood counties during her career. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, which is the international honorary of women educators and the American Association of University Women. LeHere retired to Florida in 1988 where she volunteered at Southwest Regional Hospital and at the Theater for Performing Arts in Ft. Myers. She died Oct. 15, 2012 at the age of 90.

The contribution was made in conjunction with A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University. The $750 million comprehensive campaign being conducted by the WVU Foundation on behalf of the University runs through December 2015.
