Dr. Henning Vauth, Professor of Piano and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Marshall University in Huntington, will be performing an epic tour-de-force piano work in this concert, the latest musical offering at Cavendish Hall in Kanawha City.

Vauth will be performing the momentous work, “The People United Will Never Be Defeated.” He received his DMA degree in piano performance from Eastman School of Music, and is an active concert pianist, ensemble player and mentor/instructor to piano students at Marshall.

“The People United is a set of 36 variations on the Chilean song “¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!” by Sergio Ortega and Quilapayún, and received its world premiere on February 7, 1976, played by Ursula Oppens as part of the Bi-Centennial Piano Series at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall. Rzewski dedicated the composition to Oppens, who had commissioned it as a companion piece to Beethoven‘s Diabelli Variations, and who recorded it in 1979; her recording was named Record of the Year in that year by Record World and received a Grammy nomination.”

The concert will be at 7 p.m. As usual, there will be a wonderful reception following the concert. Although admission is free, there will be a freewill offering taken to defray the artist’s expenses.

Cavendish Hall is the former George Wesley Atkinson Methodist church, now the home and studio of Jon and Vicki Cavendish. The intimate setting is perfect for small concerts, as the seating is limited to 70.

All piano students, lovers of piano music and lovers of fine music in general are cordially invited to attend.
