The West Virginia Division of Tourism (GoToWV), in collaboration with Governor Tomblin, the West Virginia Ski Areas Association, Winterplace Ski Resort and ski instructors from across the state, today hosted “Go Outside and Ski” at Winterplace Ski Resort to recognize Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month.
“The ski industry is a valuable asset to our state’s growing tourism industry and our economy,” Governor Tomblin said. “West Virginia’s lengthy ski season and our beautiful scenery make the Mountain State one of the most sought-after winter recreation destinations in the Mid-Atlantic.”
West Virginia’s ski industry has an estimated economic impact of more than $250 million per year and is responsible for 5,000 jobs at resorts and other related companies. Ski season typically starts the week of Thanksgiving and lasts through early April, weather permitting.
Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Commissioner of Tourism Amy Shuler Goodwin invited folks to “Go Outside and Ski” and join her on the slopes. She said, “Skiing is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy together. Thanks to professional instructors and special ski areas set aside for beginners, people of any age or skill level can participate.”
Downhill skiing is offered at Winterplace Ski Resort, Snowshoe Mountain, Canaan Valley Resort State Park, Timberline Four Seasons Resort and Oglebay Resort. Cross-country skiing is offered at White Grass Ski Touring Center, Elk River Touring Center and Blackwater Falls State Park.
“It’s important to get new people on the slopes and both of these programs help letting everyone know about all of the fun there is to be had in West Virginia during the winter,” President of the West Virginia Ski Areas Association and Winterplace Ski Resort Terry Pfeiffer said. “The state is blessed with great opportunities for folks to have plenty of fun on and off the slopes during the winter months.”
Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month was established nationwide in 2009 by the ski and snowboard industry. Since its inception, more than 500,000 children and adults in 34 states have participated in activities and special deals for beginners during January.
