Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and First Lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin today issued statements to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

“On September 11, 2001, Americans across our state, nation and the world experienced an unfathomable tragedy,” Gov. Tomblin said. “Thirteen years later, the American heart remains heavy. Today, I encourage all of us to renew our sense of patriotism, courage and faith that remained instilled within America and her people on that tragic day. It is my hope as we look back on the tragic events of that day, we honor those who lost their lives and recognize those who commit themselves to protecting our freedoms.”

“No matter how many years pass, we will never forget this fateful day in our nation’s history,” First Lady Tomblin said. “The Governor and I encourage all West Virginians to take time today to remember the victims and survivors, as well as the first responders who served our country during its time of need. Although we move through this day with heavy hearts, let us also be reminded that this tragedy brought about a reawakened sense of perseverance, a chance to renew and rebuild and the knowledge that we can do anything if we are united.”

This morning, Gov. Tomblin joined first responders for a moment of silence and wreath laying at the West Virginia Fallen Firefighter Memorial and bell ringing ceremony to honor those lives lost. For photos of this morning’s ceremony, click here.
