Guitar workshop at Twin Falls

West Virginia state parks offer much to do in mid-March, including a guitar workshop at Twin Falls Resort, an Irish Festival at Pipestem Resort, nature activities at Blackwater Falls, a Women’s Getaway Weekend at North Bend, an Easter egg hunt at Cass Scenic Railroad and historic arts workshops at Prickett’s Fort.

Irish Fest – Appalachian Dancing at Pipestem Resort State Park

Pipestem State Park starts the Irish fun Friday evening with Appalachian Dancing from 8 to 10 p.m. Lou Maiuri is the caller. Pipestem also is offering lodging discounts for guests who attend the Eh440 concert at the Chuck Mathena Center in nearby Princeton.

Pickin’ in the Park – Guitar Workshop at Twin Falls Resort State Park

Nationally known and award-winning guitarists Robin Kessinger, Robert Shafer and Jim Ritchey lead this weekend for anyone who is interested in learning how to play guitar or improving the skills that they may already possess.
The workshop begins Friday with a concert by the three artists, followed by guitar jams with participants and presenters. The three guitarists will present workshops on flatpicking, fiddle tunes, swing music, voice accompaniment and blues Saturday. A Saturday evening open stage concert by workshop participants will conclude the evening. The retreat will conclude at noon Sunday. Reservations and registration are necessary.

Things to Do at Blackwater Falls State Park 

The Nature Center will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. with activities, crafts and nature walks involving a search for amphibians and reptiles (Herps!) and black bear projects.

3rd annual Easter Egg Hunt at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Meet at the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park picnic shelter at 1 p.m. for an egg hunt. The event is organized by age groups with two special prize eggs per group. Then meet at the Cass Community Center for a snack donated by the Cass Homecoming Committee.

Historic Arts Workshops: Bird House or Fly Fishing at Prickett’s Fort State Park

Take your pick: bring your child to build a bird house from 9 a.m. to 1p.m., or learn the fundamentals of fly casting, equipment selection, and basic knots from top fly fisherman Jack Bell from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are required for the fly fishing workshop.

Irish Fest Saturday at Pipestem Resort State Park with Solar Creek

Try Irish Road Bowling at 2 p.m. beginning at the Nature Center. A small iron and steel cannonball called a “bowl” is hurled down a roadway, with fewest throws to the finish line winning. An Irish Buffet in the Bluestone Dining Room is featured from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Listen and dance to “SOLAR CREEK” from Beckley playing Old-Time Mountain and Irish Music from 8 to 10 p.m. There is a $5 fee. This event is sponsored by the Southern West Virginia Irish Heritage Festival. A 10 percent lodge discount is available.
