Recording artist and “America’s Got Talent” winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. will kick off the spring schedule of West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) Creators Program at the WVSU Economic Development Center (EDC) Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7:15 p.m. Murphy will speak to WVSU communications students about his life and music career as part of a special “Creators Dialogue” event.

Murphy, a Logan County native, rose to national fame on the sixth season of the NBC reality series “America’s Got Talent.” His voice and musical style, which drew comparisons to such legends as Frank Sinatra, won him the grand prize on the show in 2011, which included a record deal and a headlining show in Las Vegas.

“You can lecture, lecture, lecture about the potential of national success coming from our region, but a person in the flesh, sitting, talking with you face to face, proves it,” said Danny Boyd, WVSU communications professor and artist in residence at the EDC. “Landau is not only one of the greatest American Dream stories I’ve ever seen, but what makes it the perfect ‘dream’ is his West Virginia roots.”

The event is limited to WVSU students and cohosted by Boyd and WVSU Dean of Arts and Humanities Scott Woodard. The WVSU EDC is located at 1506 Kanawha Blvd. W. in Charleston.
