Lumos Networks today announced its membership in the Equinix Ethernet Exchange allowing its customers to seamlessly connect to locations around the world. The announcement comes just weeks after Lumos Networks earned certification as a Carrier Class Metro Ethernet Service provider from the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).  Equinix requires the same high standards as the MEF and is a valued partner in bringing connections to customers from around the globe.

Ethernet Exchange provides a new way to connect Lumos Networks with other Ethernet Service Providers outside the Lumos Networks footprint. Carriers have the opportunity to connect to Lumos Networks sites, at the same time as Lumos customers can connect outside the company’s Mid-Atlantic footprint more effectively and efficiently.

“A big focus of the Ethernet technical community has become interconnectivity between Service providers.  Lumos Networks’ participation in both Metro Ethernet Forum Certification and the Equinix Ethernet Exchange provides value to our current customers, and it also provides value to prospective customers who are looking for standards based, high quality Ethernet Services in our service footprint,” says Vice President of Product Management and Engineering Craig M. Drinkhall.

“The unique nature of our regional footprint is appealing to other service providers who may currently have limited connectivity to sites within our service area. Now with Certified Ethernet services and an easy way to connect via Ethernet Exchange, we’ll have significant new wholesale sales opportunities,” says Chief Revenue Officer and Executive Vice President Joe McCourt.  “Ethernet Exchange expands our ability to connect our customers across the Mid-Atlantic to the world.”

Ethernet Exchange via Lumos Networks provides several key benefits to customers:

  • Gives customers new options for connectivity via Ethernet to locations outside the Lumos Networks Footprint.
  • Connectivity options up to 10G as a direct network to network interconnection.
  • Saves time in ordering and provisioning connectivity to external sites via high speed Ethernet.
  • Provides MEF Certified connectivity with a seamless network both within and beyond the Lumos Networks footprint.
