Join the U.S. Small Business Administration’s West Virginia District Office for a “Boots to Business + UP” training workshop, at 5000 NASA Boulevard in Fairmont, October 28 and 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Training is provided by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Hampton Roads Veteran Business Outreach Center (VBOC) of Old Dominion University, WV Small Business Development Center, and WV SCORE.

SBA’s dedication to veterans’ stems from Administrator, Maria Contreras-Sweet’s promise to make SBA’s programs and services accessible starting with serving our military heroes. Contreras-Sweet states, “We have a responsibility to serve our veterans as well as they’ve served us.”

Nearly 1 in 10 U.S. entrepreneurs are veterans, they own 2.5 million American businesses that employ more than 5.8 million people, and their companies generate more than $1 trillion in sales a year. SBA is dedicated to providing veterans the tools they need to succeed at business.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to the Entrepreneurial Experience
  • Right Idea? Basics of Opportunity Recognition
  • Markets & Your Competitive Space
  • The Economics of Small Business
  • Legal Issues Impacting Veteran Owned Small Businesses
  • Financing Your Venture
  • Business Planning
  • Resources to Support You

“Each year there are more than 250,000 service members transitioning out of the armed forces and our office is dedicated to providing them the educational resources they need to start a small business,” states SBA WV Acting District Director, Karen Friel.  “Statistics show vets are 45 percent more likely to be their own boss than their non-veteran counterparts, which is why we need to ensure they have the resources they need.”

The workshop is held at 5000 NASA Boulevard located in the WVHTC Foundation Technology Park. The event is free to veterans, spouses, and dependents.  Registration is required at www.sba.gov/wv or by contacting Larry Batten at 304-623-7447 or larry.batten@sba.gov.
