Davis & Elkins College President Michael P. Mihalyo Jr. announced today the promotion of Carol M. Schuler to the position of Vice President for Development effective February 1, 2014. She most recently served as D&E’s Associate Vice President for Communications and Development.

In commenting on the appointment, President Mihalyo noted, “Carol has played a key role in the College’s enhanced public relations and fundraising success of recent years. Now, with responsibility for the overall fundraising, constituency relations, communications and marketing programs, she will be able to bring her considerable talents to the future success of the College in an even greater way.”

Commenting further, he noted, “During the past five years, Carol was the primary architect for D&E’s national recognition among America’s colleges and universities, including major features in The Chronicle of Higher Education and other regional and national publications.

“As Associate Vice President for the past two years, she has built a solid Communications and Marketing team while assuming responsibility for day-to-day oversight of the Development program and securing significant gift support for the College.”

Schuler takes over responsibility as Chief Development Officer from President Emeritus G. T. ‘Buck’ Smith who has served in that role since his retirement as President in June 2013. Smith will now devote his full energies to design and leadership development for a future major funding Campaign for D&E as well as support Schuler in her new role.

Schuler joined Davis & Elkins College in 2001 as Director of Communications. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Purdue University and a master’s degree in advertising from the University of Illinois.

Her previous work includes serving as Copy Director for Indiana Design Consortium Inc., where she won awards in direct marketing, corporate communications and financial services, and she was a contributing author to a book on online travel planning. She previously worked in corporate marketing in Colorado and served as Development Director for the public radio station at Colorado State University.

Schuler is a board member of District II of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). She has written for West Virginia Living magazine, and helped produce videos for the WV Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Locally, she is president of the city of Elkins Planning Commission and a past president of the Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission. Under her leadership, the Commission was awarded grants and private donations in excess of $230,000. She also helped develop the Wees National Register Historic District within the city. Schuler is a past volunteer for the city’s ON TRAC program and Vision 2010 History Committee. Earlier she helped create and manage the Randolph County Schools ArtsBank program and was a founding board member of the Randolph County Community Arts Center.
