Ahead of the 2018 General Election in November, West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner is proud to join fellow members of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in encouraging citizens to celebrate National Voter Registration Month by registering to vote.  Warner said his office will also encourage West Virginia residents who are already registered to use September to check on the status of their current registration.

As of today, there are 1,234,331 registered voters in West Virginia.

“Formal participation in our democracy starts with becoming a registered voter. As the state’s chief elections officer, I am extremely proud that my office and our county clerks worked together to register 77,319 new voters over the last 18 months,” Warner said.

Warner said that 22,518 of those new voters were high school students who will vote in their very first General Election this November.  He believes that if these young adults have a positive experience they will become lifelong voters.

The nation’s Secretaries of State established September as National Voter Registration Month in 2002 as a non-partisan means of encouraging voter participation and increasing awareness about state requirements and deadlines for voting. September 25, 2018 will be highlighted by NASS and other voter outreach groups as National Voter Registration Day.

To register to vote in West Virginia, you must be a resident of the state and 18-years old on or before November 6th. Secretary Warner’s office has valuable information, resources and accessible tools for citizens interested in learning more about the registration process. That information can be found at this link: www.GoVoteWV.com

In addition, canivote.org is a helpful tool created by NASS in conjunction with state election officials to help eligible voters learn how and where to go vote.

West Virginia’s deadline to register to vote in the November General Election is Tuesday, October 16th.
