South Charleston Chamber of Commerce Educational Foundation Awards Grants and Scholarship

During the first half of 2014, the South Charleston Chamber of Commerce Educational Foundation awarded almost $3,000 in funds to various school projects, including the following:

• Montrose Elementary received funding for its fourth grade classroom for the purchase of 2 Charles Dickens’ classroom sets that will be taught across the curriculum.

• Richmond Elementary received funding to assist with trips for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to Heritage Farms, Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine/Lost World Caverns, and Carnegie Science Center, respectively.

• South Charleston Middle School’s Special Olympics program received funding for the purchase of t-shirts for the students participating in Special Olympics.

• South Charleston High School received funding to support projects focused on the Holocaust and the 1960s to be taught to the special education classes.

Additionally, the South Charleston Chamber Educational Foundation awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Samantha King, who just graduated from South Charleston High School. Samantha was selected by the Chamber based on her demonstrated excellence in academics, and community service. Samantha has volunteered for numerous community organizations including, First United Methodist Church, Drew’s Day 5k for Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp, and Southridge Church. During her high school career, she was an honor roll student and involved in the Pink Ribbon and Recycling Clubs. Samantha will attend West Virginia University this fall to pursue a degree in Medical Laboratory Science with the goal of becoming a cardiologist.

The Educational Foundation was established to provide support for educational opportunities in the local community. The South Charleston Chamber of Commerce Educational Foundation holds fundraisers throughout the year to help raise monies to support its grant-giving and scholarship efforts. Its next major fundraiser will be the 4th Annual Boo Bash to be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Holiday Inn & Suites Charleston West.
