Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is partnering with the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office to offer a free Senior Citizen Cybersecurity workshop. The workshop will be offered on Southern’s Logan campus, Building C Room 340 on Wednesday, November 14. It will be open from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Students from Southern’s Information Technology program will be on hand to offer valuable tips to seniors on how to best secure their online information, including how to recognize potentially dangerous scams and avoiding downloading malware.

According to Bloomberg, criminals steal about $37 Billion from senior citizens ever year using cyber scams. Workshops of this kind are becoming more popular, and are needed now more than ever in today’s ever changing technological landscape.

“Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is proud to partner with the Attorney General’s office to offer this information to our community,” Dr. Robert E. Gunter, Southern’s President, said. “As the hometown community college, our primary goal is to serve our citizens, and this seminar will not only inform the public, but help them be as vigilant as possible about a very real threat.”
