University Healthcare Berkeley Medical Center was once again recognized with an “A” grade in Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog.  For its latest scores, the Leapfrog Group assigned letter grades—A, B, C, D, or F—to 2,520 hospitals based on their performance on 28 safety measures.

“This recognition by The Leapfrog Group further supports the efforts of our Board, Administration, Physicians, and Staff to provide the safest, most advanced, and highest quality healthcare to the patients we serve,” stated Anthony P. Zelenka, president and chief operating officer at Berkeley Medical Center.

Berkeley Medical Center also earned the “A” grade in the Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 Hospital Safety Scores. Nationally, fewer hospitals received an “A” in Leapfrog’s latest safety report card; 790 hospitals received an “A”, compared with 804 in April. The group used data from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, CDC, CMS, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) annual survey.

In addition to Leapfrog Group recognition, Berkeley Medical Center is recognized as a Highmark Blue Distinction Center for Knee & Hip Replacement and Surgical Safety, received Joint Commission specialty certification in Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery and Primary Stroke/Stroke Rehab, was named a Top Performer in Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission, and received the HAC Report Top Scores for Patient Safety and Infection Rates in West Virginia.
