The world’s – and West Virginia’s – future will depend on employees having specific skills to meet the demands of an increasingly dynamic work environment immersed in big data, advanced analytics and artificially intelligent technologies.

The University of Charleston is now offering an online Master of Science in Business Analytics & Applied Artificial Intelligence to prepare its students to meet these demands.

The degree offers a unique applied artificial intelligence emphasis, and provides students with the domain knowledge, industry exposure opportunities and applied skills to work in a variety of fields.

It is offered in two formats: an 11-month regular program, or a 2-year flexible format to fit the needs of working professionals. Courses within the degree include Data Science Applications & Technologies, Machine Learning, Data Visualization and Data Mining, an Artificial Intelligence Seminar, and more.

“The equivalent of this program is available only at a handful of institutions in the country, including Northeastern University and Rutgers,” explained Dr. Jim Samuel, Associate Professor, Analytics, IS & Applied Artificial Intelligence, and Director, Business Analytics and Applied AI. “Students completing this program will be prepared for employment in roles requiring strategic, quantitative and technology management skills, along with business leadership capabilities”.

In addition to his role as a UC Professor, Samuel serves as data scientist and management consultant on big data, analytics, AI innovation and information strategy initiatives, and as advisory CIO at Axivest. He is actively engaged in supercomputing and high performance computing (HPC) education and workforce development research, and holds M.Arch, M.B.A (International Finance) and Ph.D. (CIS) degrees.

Dr. Samuel has offered numerous workshops and presentations and published significant research, primarily covering textual analytics, applied machined learning, evolving applications and implications of artificial intelligence, behavioral financially analytics and human behavior in electronic markets.

Jim Samuel, Ph.D. is Associate Professor, Analytics, IS & Applied Artificial Intelligence and Director of Business Analytics & Applied AI.
