West Virginia University is one of 15 schools in the running to be named the South’s Best Tailgate by Southern Living Magazine.

The Mountaineers were portrayed as having “coonskin caps and crowds in perpetual John Denver sing-along” by the magazine.

Vote for the Mountaineers by visiting http://southernliving.com/tailgate. You can do so each day until Sept. 30 to help WVU bring home the title. In addition, you can scan an image from the September issue of Southern Living to vote.

One vote per person per day is counted toward the final tally, and votes cast on Saturdays count twice. Voters are entered daily for a chance to win $2,500 toward an ultimate tailgate.

It’s the second year that Southern Living will be naming the best tailgate of the South. Last year’s winner was Clemson University. The magazine will crown the winner of The South’s Best Tailgate at a home game this fall.

Outside of WVU, the universities competing for the title are: Alabama, Appalachian State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Louisiana State, Marshall, Mississippi, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. These schools were chosen based on four categories: most spirited, traditionalists, powerhouses and style setters.

WVU is commonly considered one of the top tailgating schools in the country. Last year, the Mountaineers earned the distinction as the 11th-best tailgate atmosphere by Tailgater Monthly Magazine.

The first tailgate of this season will take place prior to the WVU football team’s season opener on Aug. 31 vs. William and Mary.
