West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner is proud to announce that September 2019 was a record-setting month for voter registration in the state with a total of 8,020 new registrants.

September, also recognized as National Voter Registration Month, set a new record for voter registration transactions in a single month. Of the more than 8,000 new registrations, a total of 2,985 were high school students. Click here for a county-by-county breakdown

For comparison, 5,022 citizens registered to vote in September 2018. During September 2015, the year before the last presidential election, a total of 4,601 citizens registered.

Secretary Warner has focused a lot of his attention over the past 34 months on working with all 55 county clerks to register eligible citizens in the state to vote. Warner has also encouraged all citizens to update their voter registration when they move or change their name.

“I don’t believe any other state in the nation has worked as hard as West Virginia to register citizens to vote and to keep our lists up-to-date,” Secretary Warner said. “My office’s relationship with county clerks has never been stronger because we respect the job they do.”

Since Warner took office in January 2017, a total of 153,595 eligible citizens have registered to vote. Of that number, a total of 45,368 new voters were high school students when they registered.

“These are incredible numbers for a state the size of West Virginia,” Warner said. “Our Elections Division and county clerks have set the bar very high. We want to make sure every eligible voter is registered and that the registration process is easy.”

September was established as National Voter Registration Month in 2002 by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). The special recognition is meant to encourage voter participation and increase awareness of the voter registration process. The Secretary of State’s Office now hosts an easy-to-use online voter registration system. An eligible voter can register online anytime at GoVoteWV.com.
