The West Virginia Filmmakers Guild (WVFG) selected Girls on the Run (GOTR) of North Central West Virginia as their charity partner for an Oscars Party event held on Sunday, March 4, at Lakeview Resort in Morgantown. Given the #metoo movement that began in Hollywood, the WVFG chose to partner with a local charity the empowers girls and women. The evening included a red-carpet entrance with live-streaming interviews, viewing the Oscars on a large screen, and prize giveaways. Thirty-percent of the event proceeds were donated to GOTR to help make the program more accessible to all interested girls.

The WVFG is a non-profit organization with a mission to actively serve the media artists of our state through the stimulation of public awareness, education, and understanding of the social, cultural, and economic impact of the media arts in West Virginia – specifically film, video, photography, and digital media. They help industry professionals keep in touch with like-minded people for projects, general film information, as well as working to bring more film projects into West Virginia.

GOTR a physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. Program participants develop their confidence, learn about building healthy relationships and participate in a community service project while becoming physically and emotionally prepared to complete a 5K.

GOTR of North Central West Virginia impacts the lives of approximately 700 girls each year through a 10-week afterschool program led by trained volunteer coaches. Programs are held at participating schools in the following counties: Barbour, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Taylor, and Wetzel. Through the support of generous community partners like the WVFG, sponsors, grantors, and individual donors, scholarships are provided to over 80 percent of program participants.

The Spring 2018 season began the week of March 12 and concludes with the celebratory MedExpress GOTR of North Central West Virginia 5K on May 26. More info: www.gotrncwv.org.
