In a continuing effort to create a more efficient and effective West Virginia State Police, Colonel C. R. “Jay” Smithers is pleased to announce the implementation of an Accelerated Cadet Program (ACP) for the 64th Cadet Class. This new initiative was specifically designed as part of a multifaceted approach to address manpower issues, which seem to be an ongoing challenge within the West Virginia State Police.

In order to qualify for consideration to participate in the ACP, applicants must have successfully completed the Basic Program at the West Virginia State Police Academy. Prior to the start of training, all applicants accepted in the program will be given notice of the county or the general area in which they will be assigned following their successful completion of the program.

The program involves 11 weeks of training at the West Virginia State Police Academy, as compared to a regular Cadet Class comprised of 25 weeks of training. Recruiting and the acceptance of applications began on September 16, 2013. Testing for the 64th Cadet Class will begin in November. The class has a target date of March 24, 2014 to begin training.

“The Accelerated Cadet Program offers an opportunity for qualified law enforcement officers within West Virginia to become a West Virginia State Trooper and forego taking Academy classes that they previously completed during the Basic Program. I believe this program will prove to be cost effective and will allow the Agency to put qualified Troopers in the field more expeditiously.” – Colonel C. R. “Jay” Smithers

Officers interested in applying to the 64th Cadet Class are encouraged to contact either their local detachment of the West Virginia State Police or visit www.wvsp.gov for more information. Any questions or requests for interviews should be directed to First Sergeant Michael Baylous at 304-746-2198.
