West Virginia State University (WVSU) Criminal Justice students walked away with top honors at the annual West Virginia Criminal Justice Educators Association conference Nov. 3-4 at the University’s Institute campus.

WVSU Criminal Justice students swept the undergraduate paper competition at the annual conference, which represents all colleges and universities in West Virginia that offer Criminal Justice as a major. Senior Samantha Feazell took first place for her undergraduate paper titled “Victims of the Criminal Justice System: An Analyzation of Wrongful Convictions,” followed by senior Miranda Deal in second place with her paper titled “Changes in the Juvenile Justice System throughout History” and senior Kaitlyn Criner in third place with her paper titled “Examining the Need in West Virginia for the Federal Second Chance Act of Offenders.”

“I am so proud of Samantha, Miranda, Kaitlyn and all our Yellow Jacket criminal justice students for putting forth their best effort to showcase their knowledge of the criminal justice industry in this esteemed academic competition,” said WVSU President Anthony Jenkins. “I also congratulate our criminal justice faculty as the students’ recognition speaks to how well State is developing the future leaders of the criminal justice industry for our state, region and nation.”

In addition, the WVSU Quiz Bowl team earned third place in the Quiz Bowl competition at the conference.

The West Virginia Criminal Justice Educators’ Association began in 1992 to help promote the exchange of educational ideas and coursework among the institutions of higher learning and criminal justice training entities in West Virginia.
