West Virginia State University (WVSU) has been awarded a $19,995 grant from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) to implement a Collegiate Recovery Program on campus.

Collegiate Recovery Programs are supportive environments within the campus culture that reinforce the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from substance use. Housed within the Office of Counseling and Accessibility Services this program will offer comprehensive support services for recovering students.

“Participants will have the opportunity to connect with other recovering students, attend recovery support meetings, engage in community services, utilize the recovery lounge, connect to resources for academic and wellness support, and participate in alcohol and drug free social events and activities,” said Kellie Toledo, director of Counseling and Accessibility Services.

Data collected from collegiate recovery programs nationwide show that students in the programs have nearly a 90 percent graduation rate. Furthermore, the relapse rate each semester is low, at approximately 4 percent to 8 percent.

The new program will be in place for the start of the fall 2018 semester.
