West Virginia State University (WVSU) will host the first joint meeting of the WV Science Technology and Research (STaR) Symposium and the WV Academy of Science Annual Meeting on April 20-21, 2012. This two-day event, being held in Hamblin Hall, is a forum for the state’s increasingly competitive science and technology enterprise and will feature four extraordinary speakers: B. Gentry Lee, Chief Engineer, Planetary Flight Systems Directorate at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory; the Honorable Jay Rockefeller, WV Senior Senator and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation; Dr. Subra Suresh, Director of the National Science Foundation; and Dr. Paul Hill, Chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

In addition to hosting this event, WVSU will be represented by more than a dozen students and faculty as they share exciting and competitive research being conducted on the campus of WV State University. This is an opportunity for faculty, researchers, students, policymakers and business community members to share research ideas, build collaborations and learn to transform research into economic development. Activities will include four panel presentations: biotechnology start-up success stories, transforming discovery into a successful product, government and private groups available to help, and research funding opportunities within West Virginia. Each panel will include expert speakers on that topic.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, through the Division of Science and Research, along with the WV Academy of Science and the West Virginia University Research Corporation are co-sponsors of the event.
