The third year of West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) Creators Program will begin with a Regional Independent Publishing Panel at the WVSU Economic Development Center (EDC) Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Presenters of the first installment of the workshop and lecture series include Keith Davis, author of “The Feuding Hatfields & McCoys;” Cat Pleska, essayist for West Virginia Public Radio; Eric Douglas, author of “Heart of the Maya;” and William Bitner, author of “M is for Monster.” The presentation will be moderated by “Carbon” author Danny Boyd, a WVSU communications professor and artist in residence at the EDC.

Other workshops and talks scheduled for the fall include “Television, Radio, Print, Online and Social Media in the New Millennium: How to Utilize, Maximize and Monetize the Media for Maximum Impact” by Burke Allen (Sept. 24); a “Business of Film” workshop led by West Virginia Film Office Director Pam Haynes (Oct. 21); “3-D Animation 101” by WVSU Communications Professor Steve Gilliland (Nov. 8); and a “Creators Under the Tree” holiday shopping event (Dec. 3).

The Creators Program launched in 2012 as a series of community workshops for all levels focusing on skills and knowledge essential to creating for mass media and art. WVSU partners with the West Virginia Economic Development Council and the West Virginia Film Office on the series.

“The Creators Program talks and workshops cover all aspects of creating for mass media and art,” said Boyd. “The series provides education in shorter timeframes than a traditional classroom while utilizing the expertise of area professionals and WVSU’s Communications and Media Studies department.”

Space is limited for the events, and registration is required. To register, visit wvsuedc.org and click on “The Creators Program” tab. Most events are free, but in some cases there is a $20 fee and WVSU students have free admittance.

The WVSU EDC is located at 1506 Kanawha Blvd. W. in Charleston.
