WVSU to Offer New Master of Education Degree Beginning Spring 2014

West Virginia State University (WVSU) will offer a new, fully accredited Master of Education degree in Multicultural Instructional Leadership beginning with the spring 2014 semester.

This program is for certified teachers seeking a master’s degree and will provide opportunities for graduate study and research, leading to understanding the best practices in educating both multicultural and high-poverty students.

“The new Master of Education program will allow good teachers to become better teachers by providing them with the most current multicultural instructional practices. I feel this is a win-win situation for both the teachers and the public school students,” said Dr. Sandra Orr, Chair of the Education Department at WVSU.

The Master of Education in Multicultural Instructional Leadership will prepare students for careers in the field of education, particularly in school districts with high minority or poverty student demographics. The program is designed to be completed within six semesters and includes an action research project, as well as a capstone portfolio review. There are 12 required courses for a total of 36 semester hours. These courses focus on action research methodology, technology integration and instructional leadership.

Admission requirements to the program are: a bachelor’s degree with an overall GPA of 2.75 and 370+ on the Miller’s Analogy Test; three years of public school experience; and successful completion of the application process.

Graduates of the Multicultural Instructional Leadership program have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the teaching profession within their own school, district, state, nation and the world.

The deadline to apply for admission for the spring semester is Nov. 15.
