West Virginia University Student Government Association President Ryan Campione will represent the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the state at a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in Washington, D.C. on Thursday (July 11).

The discussion series called “Student Voices” is held nearly every month with college students and higher education leaders from across the country. This year, the group will discuss a variety of topics including college costs. In the past, topics for this series included financial aid, school and community safety and the importance of passing the DREAM act.

“I’m very pleased that Ryan will represent the interests and concerns of all West Virginia college students during this important ‘Student Voices’ event with Secretary Duncan,” said HEPC Chancellor Dr. Paul L. Hill. “Ryan understands the issues in a very personal way and is an outstanding representative for West Virginia.”

The meeting will include more than 15 college students from all over the U.S. The group will meet with Duncan for 30 minutes and his cabinet for the rest of the time.

“I’m very excited to be representing the students at WVU alongside my peers from other colleges around the country at this meeting,” Campione said. “I hope to discuss many of the issues that our student body has come to me with as concerns in terms of college costs and student aid.”

Duncan began this series more than two years ago as an opportunity to give college students who want more of a voice in the national education conversation that chance.

Campione will be tweeting his experience, as well. You can follow him: @RyanCampione.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is responsible for developing, establishing and overseeing the implementation of a public policy agenda for the state’s four-year colleges and universities. It is charged with oversight of higher education institutions to ensure they are accomplishing their missions and implementing the provisions set by state statute.
