West Virginia University Hospitals-East City Hospital officials celebrated the opening of the new interventional radiology suite today with a ribbon cutting ceremony co-hosted by the Martinsburg Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce.

The $2 million expansion of the interventional radiology department and installation of a new state-of-the-art Philips digital imaging system will greatly enhance City Hospital’s interventional radiology service.  Patients will immediately benefit from the speed and superior image accuracy of the digital system, which helps make interventional radiology procedures faster and reduces exposure to radiation.

In recent years, radiology has expanded beyond just diagnosis and into treatment.  Interventional radiologists, subspecialists in this field, perform an expanding range of procedures using radiologic guidance to direct catheters and other instruments.  These minimally invasive procedures treat a wide variety of medical conditions that in the past would have required open surgery to perform.

Interventional radiology offers many patient advantages.  Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay, and general anesthesia is usually not required.  A patient’s risk, pain and recovery time are often significantly reduced as a result of these factors.

Under the direction of Vivek Padha, M.D., vascular and interventional radiologist, the highly trained interventional radiology team at City Hospital provides a full spectrum of care for arterial and venous interventions, embolizations and image-guided tumor therapy, along with many other advanced procedures. These procedures have been very effective in treating many diseases including certain types of cancers, kidney and liver disease, vascular disease, and women’s health issues.

Padha joined City Hospital’s imaging department and Martinsburg Radiology Associates in 2010, following completion of a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale University School of Medicine in Connecticut.  His primary focus has been to expand interventional radiology services offerings at City Hospital in response to community demand.
