5th Annual Policy Institute Focuses on Building Partnerships

Thee state’s leadership associations for philanthropy, Philanthropy West Virginia, and nonprofits, the West Virginia Nonprofit Association, will host their joint Annual Policy Institute on Friday, December 14, 2018 in Charleston, WV.

The fifth annual policy institute that brings the state’s foundation, corporate giving programs, and nonprofits to come together with state policy makers at the WV State Capitol.

“With nonprofits employing more than 12% of our state’s workforce and serving numerous citizens, both nonprofits and foundations are key partners with government leaders in moving our state forward,” shares Paul D. Daugherty, president & CEO of Philanthropy West Virginia. He adds, “The Policy Institute connects foundation and nonprofit leaders with decision makers and advances effective public policy and government practices that allows for nonprofits, foundations, and communities to thrive in serving our state’s citizens.”

This year’s statewide Policy Institute includes several major highlights including:

  • Hosting National Council of Nonprofits Board Chair & Michigan Nonprofit Association CEO Donna Murray Brown delivering the keynote remarks titled Partnership: If not now, when?  A discussion about the power and imperative of partnership for impactful advocacy and policy work”
  • Releasing by the WV State Auditor and Governor’s Offices a summary of action steps being taken to reduce the delays of state/federal grant funds and a recommendation of best practices to better serve the nonprofit grant recipients
  • Third Meeting of the WV Impact Commission, one of the first in the nation, a convening commission that includes representatives from both the West Virginia’s executive and legislative branches with Philanthropy WV and WV Nonprofit Association to improve partnerships among government, nonprofits, philanthropy, and communities
  • A 2019 Legislative Session Forecast Panel discussing among state media and association leaders including: WV MetroNews’ Brad McElhinny, WV Public Broadcasting’s Jesse Wright, WV Manufacturer Association’s Rebecca McPhail, and Our Children Our Future’s Chris Kimes

 

“As nonprofits have to grapple with multiple challenges, the Policy Institute provides best practices on policy advocacy and government relations so that nonprofits can advocate for their organizations, communities, and our citizens,” said Laura Lee Haddad, executive director of the WV Nonprofit Association.

The Policy Institute’s impact over the past five years has contributed to several major public policy wins for nonprofits and foundations in our state, such as: increasing the audit threshold for nonprofits and renewal of the WV Neighborhood Investment Program’s charitable giving incentive just to name a few.
