West Liberty University’s sorority Beta Rho Epsilon will host a Relay For Life fundraiser Saturday, April 11, 2015 in the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex (ASRC).
“Cancer has touched so many people our community,” said Camille Bernabei, a senior from Weirton, W.Va. who is president of the sorority. “Raising awareness about this devastating disease is important.”
This is the first time a Relay for Life event has been held on the Hilltop campus. The funds raised during the event will benefit the Ohio County region of the American Cancer Society.
The event is set to start at 10 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m., but registration will start at 8:30 a.m. that morning. The event will feature games, music, live entertainment and pep rallies to encourage people all through the night.
Teams are made up of eight to 15 people. During the event, at least one member of each team is walking or running the track at all times.
The Relay For Life campus event offers an opportunity to honor the cancer survivors, promote cancer prevention, and raise money for a cure. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement.
Currently, the WLU event has 38 different teams entered with 181 participants. BPE sorority set a goal to raise $2,000 during the event and has surpassed this.
Sorority members involved in the project include: Taylor Appleton, Camille Bernabei, Olivia Best, Devyn Carpenter, Lizzy Chuma, Sam Deem, Danielle Flading, Gabby Floyd, Ashlyn Grose, Mia Huck, Rachael Huntsman, Mikayla Igo, Ashton Irvin, Maddy James, Donneshia Johnson, Alexa Jones, Lindsey Koonts, Brenna Smith, Katlynn Talkington, Asia Waggle and Caitlin Woods.
“We are all so thrilled with the involvement from both the campus and the local community,” Bernabei said. “We are pleased to have past our original goal and look forward to working together this Saturday to raise more money to fight cancer. Please join us.”
Walk-ups are welcome the day of the event. For more information, please contact junior Mia Huck of Wheeling, philanthropy chair, at 304-551-5721 or via email at mmhuck@westliberty.edu.
