WVU Club Sports Teams Bring Home Impressive Accolades This Spring

West Virginia University (WVU) added to its numerous club sports accolades this spring, as students from four different teams earned individual or team awards this spring.

The WVU Equestrian Team was awarded the High Point Team honor at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zone 6, Region 5 Championships in April.

Team member Kelsey Delaplaine, a senior agribusiness management and animal sciences major, claimed the Highpoint Cacchione Cup Rider title, as well. Delaplaine also earned the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Versatility Award at the 2013 national championship competition in Harrisburg, Pa.

The WVU Competitive cheer team was named national champion at the National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Alliance Collegiate Cheer and Dance Competition in Daytona Beach, Fla. in April. WVU earned first in the Intermediate All-Girl Division I, beating all 15 competitors by nearly two points or more. It’s the team’s second national title; the first came in 2010.

WVU economics doctorate student and middleweight boxer Jennifer Moreale was named national champion at the United States Intercollegiate Boxing Tournament at the University of San Francisco in April. She became the first female from WVU to win a national collegiate championship in boxing. It was the first boxing national title for the University since the 1930s.

The WVU Archery Club also celebrated recent achievements, as senior wood science and technology major Andrew Mack and senior music major Amanda Majocha qualified to compete in the International Bowhunting Organization World Championship in August at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania.
