Celebrating is something Cacapon Resort State Park does well. The vacation destination, located in Morgan County near Berkeley Springs, celebrated 75 years as a state park in 2012; celebrated the 50th year of the opening of Cacapon Lodge in 2006 and now, in 2013, reflects upon the birth of the 35th state of the Union – West Virginia – with a variety of activities that are geared to family and friends.

10:30 a.m. – Cacapon History Walk The Civilian Conservation Corps, Camp Morgan, helped to construct many of the structures at Cacapon State Park Meet at the Cacapon Nature Center to learn more about the CCC and their impact on this area of West Virginia from 1934- 1941.
1:30 p.m. – West Virginia Ornament – Make Your Own Craft Meet at the Nature Center to decorate your own handmade WV ornament to remember the 150thcelebration.
2 p.m. – Birthday Cake! Join us in celebrating 150 years of statehood with a cake cutting at 2 o’clock sharp in the Morgan Room.
4:30, 5 and 5:30 p.m. – Hayrides are scheduled to depart three times on West Virginia Day. Meet at the Cacapon Nature Center to take a ride through the park. There is no cost for the ride.
8 p.m. – Cacapon Campfire is a great ending for West Virginia’s birthday date. A marshmallow roast is planned and we’ll conclude with the song, “The West Virginia Hills.”

10a.m. – History Along the Ridge Meet at the Nature Center to explore the historic landscape of the Ridge Trail. This is a guided hike with several stops along the trail.
1 p.m. – West Virginia Wildlife Discovery is a hands-on, fun for all ages Discovery Table. This identification skill building game about animals and animal tracks is at the Nature Center.
2 p.m. – The CCC: A West Virginia Legacy is a 30-minute film about the Civilian Conservation Corps legacy that is still reflected by forests planted and structures built, many that were the beginning of the West Virginia state park system.
7:30 p.m. – West Virginia Jeopardy is Cacapon’s version of the game show “Jeopardy.” It’s a fun way to learn about West Virginia and will be held in the Washington Room at Cacapon Lodge. There is no charge to attend and area residents as well as park visitors and groups are welcome.

2 p.m. – West Virginia History This program is presented by Nathan Keefer, a WVU student majoring in history. It will be in the Morgan Room and is open to the public.
4 p.m. – Relive History Re-enactors will be positioned at Cacapon Lodge lawn to share history and lifestyle of the 1880s. It’s been 150 years since West Virginia became the 35thstate in the Union and interpreters are sharing their time with visitors and guests at Cacapon about the extreme impact on who we are as a nation.
7 p.m. – Concert in the Park with The Stevens Family The Stevens Family will perform on the back porch of Cacapon Lodge. The music is open to the public. The Stevens Family is a Bluegrass Band: a mom and dad, one daughter and four sons who play bluegrass the way it should be played with a passion and love for the music that really shows. They play original and standard songs in their own style and are masters on their instruments with an outstanding vocal mix that is rich in diversity and quality.
The Steven’s Family was considered for a Grammy Award in 2007, and has had several songs on the top of the most requested song charts in the past several years. The band consists of JW. Stevens (dad) banjo & vocals, Nancy Stevens (mom) vocals, Sissy Stevens on upright bass and vocals, Luke Stevens on lead and rhythm guitar and vocals, Ben Stevens on mandolin and vocals, Sam Stevens on fiddle and vocals, and Isaac Stevens (Tommy) vocals. From Berkeley Springs, W.Va,, the concert will be held prior to the fireworks display.
7– 8:30 p.m. – Hot dogs and beverages are available for purchase on the back porch
9 p.m. – Fireworks! A fireworks display will cast color and sound across the night sky. It’s a 150th celebration open to the public. Plan to arrive early, enjoy a meal at Cacapon Restaurant or simply enjoy the outdoors. In case of inclement weather, a rain date of June 23 is planned.
