Charly Hamilton and students

Celebrated Appalachian artist Charly Hamilton is among the well-known artists who are collaborating with local students to support child-centered education in Charleston. Hamilton, along with Barrie Kaufman, Keeley Steele, Nancy Johnston and other teachers and artists, led classes at Mountaineer Montessori School (MMS) to create large-scale signature art pieces that will be auctioned at “Masquerade,” a fundraiser to be presented on Saturday, April 9, 7-10 p.m. at the University of Charleston.

The event benefits financial aid, teacher appreciation and specialty program funds at the school, located at 308 20th Street in Kanawha City and 804 Myrtle Road in South Hills.

The very Montessori evening invites guests to:

  • Rock out to The Carpenter Ants and Steve Himes
  • Reveal their creative side through artistic fun, mask-making and funky photo ops.
  • Revel with wine and dessert tastings, light hors d’oeuvres, extensive live and silent auctions and more!
  • Realize the promise for the next generation of business and community leaders.

In addition to the class art projects, students have made the gala decorations and masks for party guests.

Major sponsors to date include:

  • Gold: Advantage Technology, Bailey & Glasser LLP, and BrickStreet Insurance.
  • Silver: Columbia Pipeline Group
  • Bronze: Aric Margolis Associates, Dawn Bolyard, Diana Johnson, and McKinley Carter Wealth Services
  • Creative Sponsor: Manahan Group

Tickets start at $60 per person; sponsorships are available. For more information, go to www.mountaineermontessori.org or call the MMS office at 304/342-7870.

Founded in 1976, MMS offers a rich academic and arts curriculum to 125 students ages 3-14 in student-centered learning environment. MMS is the largest, oldest and most established Montessori school in West Virginia. At MMS, children discover and become who they were meant to be.
