Recently, as part of its 60th anniversary, Cabell Huntington Hospital representatives took part in a groundbreaking event that will benefit young girls who have been the victim of sexual abuse and/or neglect.

On June 9, ground was broken for the Golden Heart Apartments. This new home, for girls over the age of 18, will be equipped with an educational resource center, five one-bedroom units, five two-bedroom units and one supportive staff unit to provide help and support for the girls, 24-hours a day.

“Every day, teenage girls in West Virginia find themselves in difficult family situations that are harmful, or even dangerous. Through no fault of their own, these girls have no place to call home,” said Nikki Lyn Thomas, non-profit development strategist with the Golden Girl Group Home. “We currently have a facility to provide a structured, caring environment for girls up to age 18, but needed a place where older girls can grow and flourish and learn how to step back out into the world on their own.”

Golden Girl Group Home (GGGH), a nonprofit home for girls, houses 24 girls, ages 12-18, that have been neglected, abused, abandoned or have negative behavioral issues. The mission of Golden Girl Group Home is to provide help to young girls through recreation, education and mentoring them in a loving and caring environment.

“Healing takes place at all levels in our community,” said Kevin Fowler, president and CEO of Cabell Huntington Hospital. “It is our mission to support a lifetime of healthcare needs. This organization is providing a much needed service of healing for these girls. We are honored to aid in their recovery and successful future through educational tools and comfortable surroundings.”

“Cabell Huntington Hospital is providing furnishings for the apartments and educational equipment for the resource center that will allow the girls to work toward a college education,” Thomas explained. “The hospital will also be providing landscaping, once the complex is complete.”

To recognize a milestone anniversary, Cabell Huntington Hospital is sharing its passion for caring for our community through a 60 Good Deeds Challenge. This challenge will continue throughout 2016 to celebrate our team’s individual and group contributions that benefit the community. For more information, please visit cabellhuntington.org.
