Cass Scenic Railroad Earns Spot on USA Today’s 10 Best Train Rides List

The Cass Scenic Railroad is being recognized nationally this summer in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards segment. The tourist railroad known best for its mountain scenery and vintage steam locomotives is competing with 19 other railroad attractions under the category of “Your Favorite American Train Ride!” The contest recognizes the top 20 readers’ choice for favorite train or rail tourist attractions in the United States.

Between now and July 18, people can visit USA Today’s 10 Best Train Rides page and vote once per day for their favorite railroad attraction until voting ends on Monday, July 18 at noon. Winners will be announced on Friday, July 22 at noon. As of June 23, the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad-operated (DGVR) Cass Scenic Railroad was ranked No. 3 among 20 national entries. It is the only tourist railroad representing the state of West Virginia.

Each year, tens of thousands travel to the Cass Scenic Railroad from all across the United States and internationally to ride behind its steam-fired locomotives. The railroad operates the largest collection of geared Shay locomotives in the country. The railroad is currently running six days a week as many as three daily train departures to Whittaker and Bald Knob.
