The Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to partner with the City of Charleston and other local and national organizers to present an action-packed series of events the weekend of Oct. 4-7.

Mayor Danny Jones and other sponsors will hold a news briefing on Oct. 3 to share schedules and other details regarding the World’s Championship Chili Cookoff (WCCC), University of Charleston Homecoming, and the Rod Run and Doo Wop (RRDW) car show – all taking place this upcoming weekend.

“Charleston is getting a reputation for putting on world-class events and this weekend just puts ‘an explanation point’ on that moniker,” said Alisa Bailey, president/CEO of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau.  “By offering tourists three distinctive yet complementary activities, we are able to attract more out-of-area visitors and that means an increased economic impact for Charleston.”

The World’s Championship Chili Cookoff takes place Friday, Oct. 5 through Sunday Oct. 6 on Magic Island. Participants can sample and vote for their favorite chili or compete in contests, such as Mr. Hot Sauce or Ms. Chili Pepper. Groups including 600 Lbs Pounds of Sin, Adam D. Tucker, Hogan’s Goat Band and Santa Cruz will take the stage to perform.

Official events for the Rod Run and Doo Wop will take place Oct. 4-7 on Kanawha Blvd. Vehicle enthusiasts will have the chance to take part in automotive swap meets, musical performances at Haddad Riverfront Park and a brown bag lunch cruise on the Spirit of West Virginia paddle boat.

The event will include 7:30 p.m. concerts at Haddad Riverfront Park each day. The Esquires will perform Thursday, Rick K. and the Allnighters Friday, and the Diamonds Saturday evening. Friday will also feature post-concert fireworks.

The University of Charleston invites community members to celebrate Homecoming 2012 this Oct. 5 and 6. Events include a parade, bon fire and s’mores roasting, pep rally and tailgate.
