Dollar General Literacy Foundation Awards Grant to Local Organization to Further Literacy and Education

Today, May 15, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Young Women’s Christian Association of Charleston West Virginia in Charleston a literacy grant in the amount of $15000 to support local literacy programs.  This local grant award is part of over $5.8 million in grants awarded today to approximately 720 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 43 states the company serves. Today’s grant announcements also bring the total impact of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s to over $100 million in grants to assist nearly six million people improve their lives through literacy and education since the foundation’s inception in 1993.

“It is exciting to see the impact grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation make throughout the country, especially as we cross the $100 million threshold in overall donations and the difference it has to nearly six million people,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “The Dollar General Literacy Foundation truly embodies the company’s mission of Serving Others throughout the communities we serve.”

Recipients of today’s grant announcements will use Dollar General Literacy Foundation funds to support programs aimed at enhancing summer, family and adult literacy programs. Grants will be used to help promote childhood summer reading or help adults learn to read, prepare for the high school equivalency exam or learn English.   A complete list of grant recipients may be found online at www.dgliteracy.org.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is also currently accepting applications for youth literacy grants through Thursday, May 21, 2015. Youth literacy grants provide funding to schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations to help students below grade level or who experience difficulty reading by providing funding to implement new or expanding literacy programs, purchase new technology or equipment or purchase books, materials or software to enhance literacy programs.
