Jesse Anderson is a park ranger at Greenbrier State Forest. His title is superintendent, but visitors and guests to West Virginia’s state parks and forests generally just say “Hey ranger!”

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) has nominated Supt. Anderson for the prestigious Service Wear Apparel Park Ranger of the Year Award. Winners are selected via an online voting system that is open Sept. 8–19, 2014.

The award, given to one Park Ranger each year by the Service Wear Apparel Corporation of Tennessee, recognizes and rewards individuals who serve their communities with excellence.

“Park Rangers serve a crucial role in preserving the beauty and history of our nation’s parks, as well as providing opportunities for excellent park experiences,” said Jim Burnett, Executive Vice President of Service Wear Apparel.  “We are excited to recognize their efforts and discover their stories of service to their communities.”

“All state parks field personnel do a great job,” said Sam England, chief of the West Virginia State Parks section of WVDNR. “Jesse Anderson distinguished himself by volunteering to manage two parks at the same time for more than six months as we completed the hiring process for a superintendent at Moncove Lake. Jesse exemplifies the spirit of dedication, sacrifice and work ethic that West Virginia recognizes in Park Rangers and superintendents. He is a credit to the Division of Natural Resources and the state park system.”

Anderson set himself apart by managing operations, maintenance, guest services, and security at both Greenbrier State Forest and Moncove Lake State Park during parts of 2013 and 2014. The areas, located in Greenbrier and Monroe counties, support more than 6,026 acres of public land and host more than 215,000 visitors annually. Cabins, campsites, picnic areas, swimming pools, lake, disc golf, sporting range, hunting and fishing are just some of the recreational activities located on the areas.
