Dr. Carolyn Stuart, executive director of the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs and chair of the Martin Luther King, Jr. State Holiday Commission, today announced plans for the annual commemoration and celebration of the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  This year’s theme is: “There’s Still Work To Be Done; If Not Now, When? If Not You, Who?”

The 2016 celebration will take place at Asbury United Methodist Church, 501 Elizabeth Street in Charleston, on Monday, January 18. The ecumenical service is from 9:30 a.m. to noon, followed by the march to the bell at the State Capitol Complex at noon with the Bell Ringing Ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

“We invite you to join us as we celebrate the life of Dr. King and the countless other individuals who made and are still making significant sacrifices and strides for us to enjoy the freedoms that we have,” Dr. Stuart said.

A reception follows immediately in the Lower Rotunda of the Capitol. The event is free and open to the public. It will be live streamed on the governor’s website, www.governor.wv.gov.
