Raymond Liu of Morgantown finished in first place among students in grades 10-12 in the Forty-First Annual West Virginia State Mathematics Field Day held April 18, 2015 at Concord University.
This is the second year in a row that the 11th grader from Morgantown High School has been the event’s champion.
Each year the first place winner of the mathematics competition has the honor of taking home the Carl Cummings Memorial Award, an impressive traveling trophy, and displaying it at his or her school for a year. For Liu, that means carrying the trophy back to Morgantown after having just relinquished it as his time as reigning champion for 2014 drew to a close.
Liu, who represents Region 7, along with the 14 other students making up the top 15 scorers in the grades 10-12 competition, will compete in the American Regions Math League (ARML) competition. The ARML event will be held May 29-30, 2015 at Penn State.
More than 200 students from across West Virginia participated in the State Mathematics Field Day at Concord University on April 18. The field day is for students in grades 4-12 with schools in each of eight regions sending three students to represent their region in each grade level 4-9 and 10 students for the grades 10-12 competition.
The West Virginia State Mathematics Field Day is sponsored in part by the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium and the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Dr. Christopher McClain, Concord assistant professor of mathematics, coordinated the 2015 event on the Concord University campus.
In conjunction with the mathematics competition, Concord faculty and students hosted an open house in the Science Building featuring demonstrations and activities in computer science, astronomy, chemistry, geology, biology and physics for K-12 teachers, students and their parents.
Lonnie Bowe, assistant professor of computer science, coordinated several activities for open house guests. He demonstrated a game for smart phones designed by Concord students. Bowe also offered attendees a lesson in programming by showing them how to build their own games at one of the computer stations in the classroom.
Associate Professor of Physics Dr. Alice Hawthorne Allen discussed topics such as the color of light and what is required to launch a rocket into space. She is the recipient of a grant for public science outreach from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium Extension.
