The second annual Future Investment Day, an event geared toward answering questions eighth-grade students have about college, will take place from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Marshall University Memorial Student Center on the Huntington campus for the eighth-grade students of Huntington Middle School.
The welcoming will take place in the Multi-Purpose Room (BE-5) of the Student Center at 9 a.m. The workshops will be located throughout the event in BE-5, the Shawkey Dining Room, and 2W22 of the student center. Closing remarks will be provided by Sean Hornbuckle in the Multi-Purpose Room at 1:20 p.m. Hornbuckle is a financial services professional at Mass Mutual Financial Group and former student body president at Marshall.
MU’s Office of Recruitment is hosting the event and the College of Science at Marshall University is the event’s sponsor. Charles Meyers has organized this event through his Future Investment Program. He is a Spring 2013 graduate of Marshall University and received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Civil Emphasis) degree.
He also is the director for the Future Investment Program, which has been responsible for the “Words of Reflection Writing Contest” and the “A Gift to Remember in December” initiatives for Huntington Middle School this school year.
For this year’s Future Investment Day, the eighth-grade students submitted questions about the importance of college, college preparation, and the college experience to their teachers prior to the event. The questions have been incorporated into each of the event’s sessions so that the students can have their questions addressed.
Hayley Cornwell, a senior criminal justice and psychology major at Marshall, and Chelsey Cosby, a senior elementary education major at Marshall, are Future Investment Program assistants and have helped with the planning and organizing of the event.
Derek L. Robinson, a graduate student at Marshall; Josh Steinle, a junior music theory/composition major at Marshall; Devan Sample, a senior English creative writing major at Marshall; Malcolm Walton, a junior journalism major at Marshall, and Donte’ Jackson, pastor at First Baptist Church of Huntington; are the event’s session facilitators.
“I am very excited that this will be the second year that Future Investment Day will take place at Marshall University, Meyers said. “Many hours of planning and preparation have gone into organizing this event.  I care about Huntington, West Virginia students realizing their potential and I take great pride in trying to help ensure that students in this community put themselves in a position to have successful futures.  I hope this event allows the students to understand that it is never too early to start thinking about the different academic paths they can take after high school and that college can be a great opportunity to pursue.”
