All four staff members at West Virginia Executive (WVE) magazine are native West Virginians who grew up exploring the hills and hollows of this great state, making priceless memories with our Mountain Mama. A lifetime of outdoor adventures, scenic overlooks and one-of-a-kind activities with family and friends have inspired a deep-rooted love for getting out and
experiencing Almost Heaven first-hand. Here, our staff shares its favorite Mountain State destinations with the hope our readers will be inspired to get out and make their own memories in wild, wonderful West Virginia.

Lindy Point

1. Lindy Point – Blackwater Falls State Park, Tucker County

When I was told we were hiking out to the overlook, I had no idea what we would find or how it would touch me. Whether you want to catch your breath, feel one with nature or get a gentle reminder of why we fight so hard for our great state, this is the place.

2. Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum – Weston, WV

History, beauty and mystery, all in one sandstone structure. This place has haunted me since the first time I saw it, and I love it.

3. River Riders’ Float Trip – Harpers Ferry, WV

This slow float down the river is one of the most relaxing activities I’ve ever experienced.

Black Walnut Festival

4. The Homer Laughlin China Co. – Newell, WV

This is probably the most colorful example of West Virginians hard at work in the state. Take the factory tour, and then shop for bargains at the on-site store.

5. Black Walnut Festival – Spencer, WV

This has been a tradition in our family since I was a child. If you haven’t tried the pulled beef sandwich, you are missing out.

Summersville Lake

1. Summersville Lake – Summersville, WV

Summersville Lake is one of my favorite places in the world because it’s beautiful and relaxing. My family and I go boating on the lake multiple weekends every summer.

2. Bridge Walk – Lansing, WV

Walking on the catwalk underneath the New River Gorge Bridge is awe-inspiring. It also makes you feel really small. Armed with a helmet and harness, this will be a hike you won’t soon forget.

3. Shepherdstown

One of the perks of working for WVE is getting to eat my way across the state. The best part of exploring West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle—aside from the beauty and history—is the variety of unique restaurants in Shepherdstown.

Hatfield McCoy Trail System

4. The Good Zoo at Oglebay Resort & Conference Center – Wheeling, WV

I love visiting the Good Zoo at Oglebay. It allows us animal lovers to get up close and personal with our four-legged friends, both local and exotic.

5. Hatfield McCoy Trail System

I love getting off the beaten path with an ATV ride through the rugged terrain of Southern West Virginia.

Greenbrier River Trail

1. Greenbrier River Trail – Greenbrier/Pocahontas Counties

My family once camped along the entire 77-mile trail, biking from campsite to campsite and completing our last 12 miles in a canoe. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.

2. Coonskin Park – Charleston, WV

This is where I learned to fish as a child and attended countless family reunions. I will always remember racing on the paddleboats with my siblings.

3. West Virginia State Penitentiary – Moundsville, WV

Hawks Nest State Park

Day or night, this former house of horrors provides an eerie tour you will never forget.

4. Coal River – St. Albans, WV

This is one of my favorite places to take a packed lunch and spend the afternoon on the water.

5. Hawks Nest State Park – Ansted, WV

This place has breathtaking panoramic views. Take a ride on the aerial tramway for a bird’s eye-view of the New River.

The Greenbrier

1. The Greenbrier – White Sulphur Springs, WV

Delicious food, on-site shopping, an infinity pool and fascinating West Virginia history are the perfect combination for a luxury getaway that is close to home.

2. Bald Knob – Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, Pocahontas County

The third highest point in West Virginia, Bald Knob offers gorgeous views into two states, and the train ride from Cass Scenic Railroad is a true Mountain State experience.

3. Cathedral Falls – Gauley Bridge, WV

My family and I used to stop at Cathedral Falls on the way home from visiting my great grandmother. One of the state’s highest and most scenic waterfalls located just off Route 60, the natural amphitheater is perfect for picnicking and playing.

4. Mountaineer Field – Morgantown, WV

Are you even a Mountaineer if you’ve never been to Milan Puskar Stadium? There is nothing more exhilarating than running out of the tunnels onto the field as a member of the “Pride of West Virginia” Mountaineer Marching Band!

Coopers Rock

5. Coopers Rock – Coopers Rock State Forest, Monongalia County

The main overlook at Coopers Rock facing the Cheat River is such a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets of Morgantown. I’ve done everything there from hiking to celebrating my birthday.
