West Liberty University’s Associate Professor of Marketing Dr. Joseph Scarpaci was named to the National Fulbright Selection Committee recently.

“I am pleased to be invited to serve on the national selection committee and to be involved in this important process of naming students for Fulbright Scholarships to pursue research and teaching overseas,” Scarpaci said.

Scarpaci is the chair of the department of marketing and management, which is part of the Gary E. West College of Business. He was notified by the Institute of International Education and will serve on the committee for the Southern Cone region that includes Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil. It will meet at the United Nations in New York City, Dec. 4.

The Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organization that promotes stronger cultural relations between the U.S. and other nations through educational exchange and training programs.

Dr. Scarpaci specializes in Cuban culture and the emerging Cuban economy. Now in his second year of teaching at West Liberty University, he teaches marketing research methods, marketing principles, retail marketing and international marketing.

Most recently, Scarpaci was selected as a reviewer for one of the American Marketing Association’s five flagship journals, the “Journal of International Marketing.”

He also has been reappointed to the International Advisory Council for the journal “Economia, Sociedad y Territorio,” published by the Colegio Mexiquense in Toluca, Mexico. The journal focuses on economic development strategies and undergoes periodic review by the Mexican-equivalent of the NSF. He also continues to serve on the editorial board of Health & Place (published by Elsevier in the Netherlands) and Southeastern Geographer. He has been reappointed as book review editor for the Journal of Latin American Geography.

Scarpaci published a chapter on heritage cities in Latin America and their promotional strategies in D. F. Fairchild’s 2012 publication, “On Location: Heritage, Cities and Sites.” In 2011, Routledge Press published his book “Marketing without Advertising: Brand Preference and Consumer Choice in Cuba,” co-authored with Emilio Morales.

Scarpaci also led an educational group for the American Geographical Society on a trip to Cuba last November. This trip featured his lecture series and marked his 51st trip to Cuba.

Closer to home, Scarpaci edited the 2006 book, “Pittsburgh and the Appalachians:  Cultural and Natural Resources in a Postindustrial Age,” commissioned to celebrate 75 years since the founding of the University of Pittsburgh Press.
