The West Virginia University Foundation says alumni and friends of the University gave $99.5 million in cash and in-kind gifts between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013, well exceeding the Foundation’s $80 million goal.

“When you think about the instability of the economy over the past few years, it truly is remarkable that we continue to see private giving at these levels,” said Wayne King, president and CEO of the WVU Foundation. “It speaks volumes to the many good things happening at WVU, and the passion and loyalty of our alumni and friends. We are very grateful to our donors.”

Over the past fiscal year, 20,920 donors made 35,093 gifts. The contributions span all areas of the University, from academics to research, to health sciences to athletics.

“So many people have been incredibly generous to our University again this year, and we are extremely grateful,” said WVU President Jim Clements. “While each has a unique reason for contributing, they share a passion for this place and a belief in the land-grant mission of WVU. Their support inspires us to work as hard as we can to make a positive impact in our state, nation, and world. That is the best way we can truly say thank you for believing in our students, staff, and faculty.”

The Foundation’s annual giving program – The University Fund – recorded its second highest yearly total ever in FY13, approximately $21.1 million, just $200,000 short of last year’s all-time record of $21.3 million.

WVU Health Sciences Development raised $23.6 million in FY13 while Mountaineer Athletic Club donations totaled $23.1 million.

Major gifts received in FY13 included an in-kind software gift from Landmark to the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences valued at nearly $15 million; a $7.5 million donation from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust to the College of Law; and a $4 million gift from BrickStreet Foundation to the College of Business & Economics and Athletics.

In June of last year, the Foundation launched its largest comprehensive campaign in the history of the University, $750 million. Gifts received by the Foundation during FY13 go toward A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University. Through March 31, 2013, donors had contributed $629 million to the campaign. The next campaign achievement update will be announced later this month. For more on the campaign, visit: www.astateofminds.com
