Keeping up its tradition of encouraging employees to behave according to the highest of standards, WVU Medicine University Healthcare announced today that it will be participating in Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week, organized each year by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics and Health Care Compliance Association.

This year it is being held November 1 through 7, 2015. As a part of its efforts, University Healthcare will be providing staff with additional information regarding compliance in the healthcare field, i.e. information pertaining to The Deficit Reduction [False Claims”] Act, motivational PowerPoint slides, additional educational information pertaining to doing the right thing when it comes to compliance, ethics and their own personal integrity on the job.

Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week is an extension of University Healthcare’s ongoing compliance and ethics program, which is headed by Debbie Lupton, RHIT.  University Healthcare has a code of conduct that all employees are expected to follow.  The code calls on employees to, “Respect others, commit to Teamwork, work with Integrity, and provide Excellence in the workplace while providing Quality care and services with Stewardship.”

Company-wide compliance and ethics education, held upon hire, as well as throughout the year during staff meetings and again annually provides the opportunity to roll-out new and updated compliance and ethics program policies and reinforces with employees their compliance and ethics’ obligations.

“In the current health care regulatory environment, corporate compliance programs are an essential business function for identifying risk and avoiding liability,” stated Anthony P. Zelenka, FACHE, president and CEO of University Healthcare.  He added that a solid corporate compliance program is very important, particularly now given the Government’s expanded resources and increased focus on prosecuting fraud and abuse.

The first National Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week, developed by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics and the Health Care Compliance Association, was held May 22-28, 2005. This year will be the 11th annual Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week celebration.  Since 2005, Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week has been celebrated by companies more than 1,500 times.
