WVU Medicine University Healthcare at Home joins home health agencies across the nation in celebrating November as National Home Care Month under the theme, “Home Care Delivers Freedom.”

“Caring for the elderly, disabled and chronically ill in their homes truly is a privilege for us,” said Judy Hockman, system director of outpatient clinical services at University Healthcare at Home. “Skilled home care professionals and advances in modern medicine make it possible for people to stay in their homes longer, regardless of their medical condition.”

Through technological advances, home-delivered health care has grown far beyond basic

nursing and home health aide services. Today’s modern home health agency offers a wealth of skilled home care services.  “University Healthcare at Home provides nursing, physical and occupational therapy, home health aide, nutritional and medical social services to patients in Berkeley and Jefferson counties,” Hockman said.

According to Hockman, there are many benefits to home care.  “Home care plays an important role in helping patients improve their quality of life.  It is personalized, encourages independence and promotes healing often reducing recovery time,” she commented, adding that it also can be less expensive that other types of care.

Medicare, Medicaid and most commercial insurance companies cover the cost of home health services when admission criteria are met. Despite massive cutbacks in government funding, home care continues to be the preferred means of receiving quality health care services for millions of Americans.  “At University Healthcare at Home, we believe that quality care can be provided in a compassionate, safe, and cost effective manner in the home,” Hockman stated.

University Healthcare at Home is Joint Commission Accredited and a Medicare certified home health agency. The corporate office is headquartered in the Burr Industrial Park in Kearneysville (behind the DMV).  For more information, call 304-728-1750.
